Meet Dr Kelly Gan, BSc, DVM, MANZCVS (Avian Medicine and Surgery)

Dr Kelly graduated from the University of Melbourne with a Bachelor of Science, majoring in Zoology, followed by a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. Birds have always been her passion.

Kelly began her veterinary career working in small-animal general practice and emergency clinics. After seeing birds in her first consultations, she quickly realised that avian medicine was where she wanted to focus her career.

Kelly then worked at a well known avian clinic in Melbourne. She spent three years at this clinic, developing and advancing her knowledge and skills in avian veterinary care. In 2026, Dr Kelly was admitted as a Member of the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists (MANZCVS) in Avian Medicine and Surgery. This recognised her advanced knowledge and commitment to the field.

Kelly is passionate about animal rescue and has volunteered her time with numerous rescue groups, helping to transport stray and injured birds and providing veterinary assistance to birds requiring urgent after-hours care.

Through her work in avian practice, Kelly saw how difficult it could be for Geelong bird owners to access timely veterinary care close to home. This inspired her to start The Mobile Bird Vet, providing much-needed avian veterinary care across Geelong, the Surf Coast and Bellarine regions.

Kelly has a particular soft spot for ducks and is mum to many rescue Muscovy ducks, as well as two White-bellied Caiques and two Cockatiels. Her own birds have given her plenty of first-hand experience with the joys, and occasional challenges, of sharing a home with feathered family members!

Meet Nurse Alice, RVN

Alice is a Registered Veterinary Nurse with a lifelong love of all things feathered! She has a particular passion for avian medicine and loves working with all birds, from tiny finches to cockatoos and macaws. Alice loves helping bird owners feel confident and supported when caring for their feathered family members.

Before becoming a veterinary nurse, Alice worked as an avian zookeeper, where her love for birds and interest in their behaviour, husbandry and health really took off. She has since completed her Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing and is currently studying a Bachelor of Veterinary Technology and a Graduate Certificate of Ornithology at Charles Sturt University.

Since graduating as a vet nurse Alice has been working both in general practice and at an exotics clinic in Melbourne, where her avian patients have always been her favourite. As soon as Dr Kelly said she wanted to start helping birds in the Geelong region, Alice knew she had to be involved.

Her love of birds continues well beyond the clinic. Alice operates a DEECA-authorised wildlife shelter, working alongside three wonderful wildlife carers to rehabilitate native wildlife. In her spare time, she can often be found volunteering and getting involved in conservation projects, including assisting with field research for Phillip Island Nature Parks.

Alice shares her home with some amazing rescue birds including George the Sulfur Crested Cockatoo, who loves to go on outings to local cafes.

It’s pretty safe to say that if there’s a bird involved, Alice will be there!

Testimonials

Freckles Fellowship

I have had the pleasure of having Dr Kelly as my avian veterinarian for 3 years, during which she has shown incredible skill, professionalism, and kindness.

Finding a veterinarian who understands the unique care of birds and has genuine compassion for both patients and owners is a challenge, but Dr Kelly proves you really can have the best of both worlds, even if you’re me and calling for urgent help at midnight!

Regardless of whether I am bringing a patient for a checkup or running in with an emergency, I know my birds will be safe with Dr Kelly.

Kiwi's New Life Bird Rescue

We have had the pleasure of having Dr Kelly care for many of our rescue birds, and we couldn’t be happier with the level of care she provides.

Kelly is incredibly thorough and takes the time to personally examine every bird, no matter how large the group. On one occasion, we brought in a lot of 47 canaries, and on another, a lot of 23 budgies. Kelly made sure to hold, examine and check every single bird individually. That level of dedication and attention to detail means so much to us as a rescue. We know that every bird in our care deserves to be treated as an individual, and Kelly shares that same commitment.

We have complete trust in Dr Kelly and the care she provides to our rescue birds. We are incredibly grateful to have a veterinarian who treats each of our patients with such compassion, patience and professionalism.

Highly recommended by Kiwi’s New Life Bird Rescue Inc.

Client

Dr Kelly is the first vet who truly understood the bond I share with my hens, along with the care and worry I feel when they're unwell. She's patient, never rushes, and offers exceptional care — both preventative and emergency. Her knowledge as a bird vet is phenomenal, which is why she's the only vet I trust with them.
